What Happens During Tummy Tuck Surgery?
Check out the process from start to finish, as explained by a doctor specializing in tummy tuck surgery.
Before the Surgery
The journey to a flatter stomach starts with a consultation with a tummy tuck surgery doctor. The surgeon will check the medical history and examine your abdomen. You will receive detailed instructions, such as avoiding smoking and certain medications that could interfere with healing.
On the day of surgery, you will receive anaesthesia, usually general anaesthesia, so you will be completely asleep and comfortable throughout the procedure.
The Procedure
Once you are under anaesthesia, the surgeon will begin by making an incision low on your abdomen, just above the pubic area. The length of this incision depends on how much extra skin needs to be removed, but it’s usually hidden below the bikini line. If you are having a full tummy tuck surgery, another incision may be made around your belly button to reposition it after the skin is tightened.
After the incision, the surgeon will lift the skin to expose the abdominal muscles, which often become weakened or separated (a common issue after pregnancy). The surgeon stitches these muscles together, tightening them. This step is key to achieving a firm, flat abdomen.
Next, the excess skin is trimmed away. Sometimes, liposuction is also used to remove stubborn fat deposits. Once everything is tightened and smoothed, the remaining skin is pulled down and stitched in place. A new opening for your belly button is created and carefully positioned to look natural.
After Surgery and Recovery
After the procedure, you will have bandages and possibly small drainage tubes to prevent fluid buildup. You will also wear a compression garment to help minimize swelling and support your healing abdomen.
The first few days can be uncomfortable, with some swelling and difficulty standing fully upright, but you will be encouraged to move around gently to promote healing. Most people return to light activities in about two weeks, but full recovery and final results may take a few months.
